Frequently Asked Questions

Our Practice Philosophy

Like you, we value personalized treatment and are committed to avoiding the impersonal, assembly line approach so common in healthcare today. Our goal is to restore function while minimizing pain, and we believe in reducing the chronic use of medications whenever possible.

Too often, patients are only offered limited treatment options or rely on medications (such as opioids) that may not work, have intolerable side effects, or fail to provide adequate relief. This type of “fast food” medicine is very efficient but rarely provides satisfactory results.

Neuroscience Pain Center is part of First Choice Neurology, the largest neurology group in the country. This gives us the resources to help patients while allowing us to avoid treating our patients as if they are just a number. Navigating the healthcare system can be challenging, and even simple tasks like making appointments can become difficult. At our office, we prioritize direct communication and strive to make your experience as smooth as possible.

We look forward to welcoming you and providing the individualized care that you and your family deserve.

Our Providers and Staff

Antonio Mesa, DO

Alejandro Perez Oliva, APRN

Thania Duran is our clinical coordinator. She brings over 30 years of direct patient care experience to our team. She has been with Neuroscience Pain Center since 2009 and is the main point of contact for patients with questions regarding their care. Thania works with our providers to get patients the help they need.

Dayanee Ayala is our surgical coordinator. She has over 15 years of experience dealing with insurance companies, clinics, and urgent care centers. She is in charge of getting authorizations for procedures and scheduling them in the office or surgery center. Dayanee is a valuable resource for patients in dealing with the intricacies of the healthcare bureaucracy which has made getting care so difficult for many patients.

Massiel De La Rosa runs our front desk. She is the first person most people meet in the practice. She can help direct patients to the appropriate person to get the help they need and is in charge of scheduling office appointments. Massiel can also step in to help the rest of the staff when things are busy.

Kaylee Baldeon is our office manager. She is an honors graduate from FIU and helps keep the many aspects of our practice operating smoothly. She is in charge of working with our Central Business Office, which provides important back office services to our care center. Kaylee also helps back up the rest of the staff when things are particularly busy.

Please call us if you are not sure whether we are on your plan.

Do you offer same day appointments?

Yes, we may be able to offer same day appointment, please contact our office for availability.

Note that many insurance plans require a referral for specialist visits and will not cover visits without a referral. Check with your insurance company to make sure your plan does not require a referral. Original Medicare and Medicare Supplemental plans typically do not require referrals, but most Medicare Advantage plans do require referrals.

Do you offer telemedicine/virtual visits?

Yes, certain visits can be done via telehealth.

Can you do my procedure on the same day as my consultation?

We can but most plans, including original Medicare, Medicare Supplemental, and Medicare Advantage will not cover a procedure on the same day as a consultation. For original Medicare and Medicare Supplemental plans, we can usually do the procedure the next day.

Medicare Advantage plans, and many other health insurance plans, require prior authorization in order to cover a procedure. For those patients who do not want to wait for prior authorization, we offer a self-pay option.

Do you have any other offices?

All office visits and most procedures are done at Neuroscience Pain Center, our state-of-the-art facility centrally located in South Miami, close to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, at 3911 SW 67th Avenue in Miami. Certain procedures are sometimes done at two nearby surgery centers.

The pain center is part of First Choice Neurology, which has over 70 locations throughout Florida. Certain tests such as EMG’s, EEG’s, and MRI’s are done at some of our other locations.

Do I need to have imaging (x-rays, MRI's, CT's, ultrasounds, etc.) done prior to my initial consultation?

No. If you do not have imaging done prior to your first visit with us and we find some specific imaging is needed, we will order it at that visit.

Do you do imaging in the office?

We perform certain x-rays, ultrasounds, and other testing in the office. Neurophysiologic tests such as EMG’s, EEG’s, and sleep studies are done at some of our other First Choice Neurology locations. We ask that you please consult with us regarding where to get your tests before scheduling them to ensure the tests are being done in the appropriate facility with good quality control.

Do you offer physical therapy in your office?

No. We work with you to help find a physical therapy center that is on your plan and is close to home or work to make it convenient for you.

I need someone to prescribe my pain medications. Do you provide pain medications?

We are not a medication management practice. We offer interventional pain management, which uses a multimodal approach that includes procedures and physical therapy. There are many other practices in South Florida that offer medication management for pain.
