Capsular Contractures

Information about some of the pain conditions we can help you manage

Capsular Contractures

Capsular contractures occur when scar tissue forms around a breast implant, causing the breast to become firm and unnatural in appearance. This can be a painful and uncomfortable condition, and may also cause the implant to shift or harden.

We utilize advanced treatments such as acoustic wave therapy and ultrasound-guided hydrodissection injections to help alleviate capsular contractures. These treatments use targeted sound waves and precise injections to break up scar tissue and reduce inflammation in the affected area, ultimately restoring a natural appearance and comfortable and feel to the breast.

Our goal is to achieve an esthetically pleasing result that feels as good as it looks. This allows patients to avoid having to go through the discomfort and risks of revision surgery.

Breast Implant Illness (BII)

Too often, the focus on treatment of breast implant illness revolves around removal of breast implants themselves rather than understanding the systemic nature of the condition. In fact, breast implant illness is not limited to breast implants. Almost any implant can trigger this condition given the right circumstances and the condition should really be named implant illness.

This is because implant illness occurs as a result of activation of the immune system in the presence of an implant. It can occur regardless of whether there was an infection of the implant and can continue even after the implant is removed. People with underlying autoimmune or immunological conditions (they are not the same thing) are more at risk of developing implant illness. Our goal is to identify the cause of the condition and develop an individualized treatment plan to help control the symptoms.

If you are concerned about having or developing this condition, we use a variety of diagnostic tests, including labs and ultrasound examination of the implant or the area where the implant was if it has already been removed. Based on our findings, and the symptoms causing problems, we will tailor the treatment to maximize pain control, help calm the immune system, and ideally avoid additional surgery (which is sometimes the trigger for implant illness and can make symptoms worse).
