Interventional Orthopedics and Regenerative Prolotherapy

Interventional orthopedics and regenerative prolotherapy are advanced, non-surgical treatment options designed to help your body heal naturally. These therapies are ideal for those dealing with joint pain, ligament injuries, or chronic musculoskeletal conditions, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery.

What is Interventional Orthopedics?
Interventional orthopedics uses cutting-edge techniques to target and treat joint, tendon, ligament, and cartilage injuries. Using advanced imaging guidance, we can precisely deliver treatments like regenerative prolotherapy or stem cell therapy to the affected area. These therapies harness your body’s own healing powers to repair and rebuild damaged tissue.

What is Regenerative Prolotherapy?
Regenerative prolotherapy involves injecting a natural solution, often combined with other healing agents, into damaged ligaments, joints, or tendons. This stimulates your body to repair itself by promoting new cell growth and reducing pain over time.

One of the most common prolotherapy solutions is platelet-rich plasma (PRP). While there are many other prolotherapy solutions that can be much more effective, PRP is heavily marketed and readily available. PRP can also be combined with other natural agents to enhance the healing effects. Selecting the right prolotherapy solution is the best approach to getting the most out of this type of therapy.

When to Expect Relief and How Long It Lasts
Local anesthetic begins to take effect immediately and reaches its maximum effect in about 45 minutes. This effect lasts between a few hours up to a day or so.

Prolotherapy (including PRP) takes a little longer to have a noticeable effect than steroids. It can take up to three weeks for the effects to become noticeable. On the other hand, the effects can last longer than steroids, particularly when supplemented by good physical therapy and a consistent home exercise program. Many patients combine an initial injection with steroids to reduce inflammation followed by prolotherapy later on.

Is Sedation Available?
Yes. We offer options tailored to your comfort preferences and medical needs.

This is a minor, low risk procedure that typically does not require sedation and can easily be done with just local anesthetic. For those patients who prefer sedation, we offer sedation both in the office and in the surgery center.

Instructions Before the Procedure
1. If you take blood thinners, we will provide detailed instructions on whether you need to stop them and when to stop and restart them if you must stop them for the procedure.

2. Please let us know if there are any changes to your health, such as a new pregnancy, or if you start antibiotics before your procedure.

3. If you choose sedation in our office, plan for a friend or family member to drive you home afterward. They are welcome to wait in our comfortable waiting area during your procedure, or you can call them when you are ready to leave.

4. These procedures are rarely done in a surgery center or hospital. If you are going to have sedation for one of these procedures in the surgery center or hospital, we will provide additional instructions.

Instructions After the Procedure
Rest and Activity:

  • Take it easy on the day of your procedure. You can return to your regular activities the following day.
  • Avoid operating heavy or potentially dangerous equipment on the day of your procedure.
  • If you had sedation, plan to avoid driving for the rest of the day.

Alcohol: If you received sedation, please skip alcohol for the rest of the day.

Dressings: You can gently remove any adhesive bandages, like Band-Aids®, the day after your procedure.

Blood Thinners: You can restart your blood thinners the day after your procedure unless we have advised you otherwise.

Comfort at the Injection Site: It’s normal to feel some mild discomfort where you received the injection. Applying ice can help ease the soreness—just remember to wrap the ice in a cloth and avoid placing it directly on your skin. Refrain from using heat on the injection site on the day of your procedure.
