Spine Surgery Second Opinion Program
Too many times, patients rush into potentially life-changing spine surgery without a formal assessment of their condition, prognosis, and available treatment options. There are times when surgery is the only option that might help. Other times, however, there may be alternatives that do not require spine surgery with all its attendant risks. This program provides the opportunity to pause and evaluate what’s happening and what can be done before committing to surgery.
Many patients take advantage of this option after setting a date for surgery. This way there is no delay if the final decision is to proceed with surgery. It is always more comforting to know one has made the effort to understand whether surgery is the right choice.
How It Works
Patients requesting a surgical second opinion are asked to bring in a copy of their records, including surgical consultation notes, MRI, CT, and x-ray reports and CD’s, as well as copies of any diagnostic testing such as an EMG/nerve conduction studies. These should be dropped off at the office ahead of time so they are available during the consultation. If we find additional testing is needed, we will let you know before the visit.
During the visit, you will be evaluated from both an orthopedic and neurological perspective. We will discuss your case and provide you with our recommendations regarding the best course of action. We will also answer your questions regarding our recommendations.
A final report containing our recommendations will be prepared. This report is available for you to review through our patient portal. If you would like us to send a copy of that report to your spine surgeon or another physician, we would be glad to do so.
Spine surgery is a major decision which can result in permanent changes to your spine and your ability to participate in physical activities. It is not a decision to take lightly. The second opinion program can help make that decision clearer.
